Collation and Annotation of Ten Selected Rare Chinese Medical Formulary Books from Overseas

精选海外珍稀中医方书十种校释

Ten Convenient Effective Formulas (Shi Bian Liang Fang), in 40 volumes, is a renowned formulary of the Southern Song Dynasty, completed in the first year of the Qingyuan era (1195). The author was Guo Tan, courtesy name Lüdao, a native of Fenyang (present-day Shanxi Province). Two distinct versions of Ten Convenient Effective Formulas survive today. The first consists of several incomplete manuscripts preserved in Japan, bearing the title Beiquan Gujin Shibian Liang Fang (Comprehensive Ten Convenient Effective Formulas of Past and Present; hereinafter referred to as the "Comprehensive Version"). The second is a fragmentary Song Dynasty printed edition held at the National Library of China, titled Xinbian Jinshi Shibian Liang Fang (Newly Compiled Ten Convenient Effective Formulas of Recent Times; hereinafter referred to as the "Newly Compiled Version").

Ten Convenient Effective Formulas comprises 40 volumes with extensive content, integrating medicine and pharmacy.

Volumes 1 to 7 introduce medicinals. Among these, the effects of 64 commonly used Chinese medicinals occupy three volumes. Beyond these 64 medicinals, there are an additional three volumes titled "Essential Excerpts from Materia Medica on Ubiquitous Medicinals." Volume 7 is specifically devoted to methods of medicinal identification and processing; the processing methods for the 64 main medicinals covered in the book are also concentrated in this volume.

Volumes 8 to 33 use diseases as the guiding framework to organize various formulas. These diseases include: all wind disorders, cold damage disorders, all qi disorders, spleen and stomach disorders, deficiency and debility disorders, phlegm-rheum disorders, accumulated heat disorders, eye disorders, large and small intestine disorders, gynecological disorders, pediatric disorders, and sores, swellings, fractures, and injuries. These 26 volumes constitute the main body of the book. Preceding the discussion of each disease, the etiology is occasionally explained. Under each disease category, relevant treatment formulas are grouped together. The author put considerable effort into arranging the formulas conveniently for patients and their families.

Volumes 34 to 40 contain "miscellaneous formulas." Among these, Volume 34 covers pulse diagnostics; Volume 35 covers health preservation prohibitions and precepts; Volume 36 covers mineral/dan elixirs; Volume 37 covers "immortal dietary supplements" and medicinal wines; Volume 38 covers dietary therapy; Volume 39 covers hair and beard care and antidotes; and Volume 40 introduces certain emergency methods and "beneficial decoctions for various conditions."

This book serves as a reference for TCM clinical practitioners, TCM literature researchers, and TCM enthusiasts.
