Jane's husband has left her because of her own stubbornness. She could get him back, but does she want to? She retreats to a backwoods hot springs resort to figure out what to do. She is shocked by what she finds when she arrives at the resort. It has taken on a new identity from when she'd been there before. No longer is it unapologetically rustic. No longer does it reek of history and heartbreak. Modern hotels litter the property and fancy soaking pools fill with visitors, as the original old hotel falls into disrepair.
As she's taking the waters, she wonders what has happened to the ghost she encountered during her stay in the 100-year-old hotel thirteen years prior, now that guests are forbidden to stay in the historic hotel. She embarks on a quest to learn about the life of the woman whose ghost haunted the old hotel, and in doing so, she finds the answers she seeks for her own life. "Taking the Waters: A Ghost Story" is a work of short fiction based on true occurrences and delves into the fascinating and tragic lives of Pacific Northwest pioneers.
