Pełny opis

Multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are a heterogeneous population of cells, which reside in a variety of tissues. They contribute to tissue-homeostasis by differentiating into several mesodermal lineages and by possessing trophic activities as well. For example, MSCs are able to exert immunosuppressive activities by interfering with T- and B-cell proliferation and inflammatory cytokine production. These immunomodulatory features make MSCs promising candidates for the treatment of chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorders. However, there are certain risks involved, primarily with an allogenic stem cell therapy. Among these are problems such as immune system rejection, graft versus host disease, tumor formation and inappropriate migration of cells in the body. This book discusses the chances and risks of adult stem cells in general and MSCs in particular in regenerative medicine.Further, thepossibilities for stem cell-dependent therapy of inflammatory disorders and autoimmune diseases are explored in depth.
