Sikhism is often reduced to a handful of images: the turban, the beard, a vague notion of swords and free kitchens. This book moves past those fragments to explain the coherent body of belief behind them, tracing the tradition from its origins in fifteenth century Punjab to its place in the world today.
The book opens with Guru Nanak's foundational teaching of one formless divine reality, and the unconventional system of succession that carried this teaching through ten Gurus across two centuries. It then turns to the Guru Granth Sahib, examining how scripture itself was elevated to the status of eternal Guru and how it functions as a living presence in daily devotional life. From there, the book explains the founding of the Khalsa and the meaning behind each of the Five Ks, correcting common misunderstandings along the way, particularly regarding the Kirpan.
