B1 PRELIMINARY READING TEST
The B1 Preliminary Reading test is designed to assess the reading proficiency of candidates at a B1 level (intermediate). It comprises six distinct parts, each testing different aspects of reading comprehension in various contexts:
Part 1
Candidates read five real-world notices, messages and other short texts to identify the main message. This part tests understanding of essential information in everyday texts.
Part 2
Candidates match five descriptions of people to eight short texts on a particular topic. This part assesses detailed comprehension and the ability to scan for specific information.
Part 3
Candidates read a longer text and answer five multiple-choice questions. This part tests detailed comprehension, inference, global meaning, and understanding of the writer's attitude and opinion.
Part 4
Candidates read a text from which five sentences have been removed and must select the correct sentence for each gap. This part evaluates understanding of text structure, coherence and cohesion.
Part 5
Candidates complete a multiple-choice cloze test by choosing the correct vocabulary items. This part tests lexical knowledge and collocation.
Part 6
Candidates complete an open cloze test by supplying one word for each gap. This part assesses grammatical knowledge, including phrasal verbs and fixed phrases.
