The main attempts to explain the radical and intricate changes reshaping the relationship between the economy and society over the last twenty years have run up against the inadequacy of the traditional analytical tools posited on market streamlining and flexibility. The author guides the reader through the conceptual jungle by offering a clear guide to the key technological, organizational and institutional innovations in capitalism's development. He reconstructs the pattern connecting community, needs, modes of production, the institutions and manifold facets of markets, and leads the reader to the latest development - capitalism's global reach. In the light of the unsustainable costs of globalization implemented by the Triad - the United States, Japan, the European Union - through economic marginalization and political destabilization of the three-quarters of the planet, the author suggests an alternative approach founded upon a polycentric system of cooperation and solidarity - thus breaking the bonds of capitalism in the twenty-first century.
