From a single acorn in 1780 to the towering ancient tree it is today, the oak tree Quercus has written a miniature ecological revelation through its own life story. Over more than two centuries of weathering the elements, it has witnessed the disappearance and return of wolves, survived the devastation and rebirth brought by storms, and observed the transformation of the wastelands of pre-revolutionary France into the forests of today.
It is a tree, but it is much more than that. Underground, it weaves information networks with fungi; above ground, it forms defensive alliances with birds; and in its struggle with humans over resources, it holds its ground. Biologist Laurent Tillon first encountered this tree in his youth and spent years tracing its life story.
