Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time is widely regarded as the greatest novel ever written. It constitutes a portrait of French, not to say of human, life, mind and manners, mostly through a number of love affairs and other encounters covering the years before, during, and after the first world war, from about 1871 to 1922. In his work Proust recounts his Odyssey in great depth and detail in the form of his loves and other lifechanging encounters with all sorts of people. He recounts his eventful, emotional, contemplative and amorous life, together with the life of his well-knit and loving family and of his numerous and mostly cultivated, brilliant and odd friends and acquaintances. He finally finds his Ithaca and his redemption through some extratemporal and Platonic experiences which led him to the realisation of the reality of Art and to his decision to dedicate himself to recording his whole life in a true, an imperishable work of Art, in his great novel "In Search of Lost Time".
