Insects and small creatures are an important component of flower-and-bird painting, combining exquisite technique, precise form, and vivid expression. By depicting the shape, spirit, rationale, and charm of these tiny creatures, artists capture the wondrous transformations of the natural world-truly embodying the concept of "seeing the big through the small" in Chinese painting.
Baimiao (fine line) insect drawing serves not only as the foundation for gongbi (meticulous) insect painting, but also as an important underpinning for the jiangong daixie (half-meticulous, half-freehand) style, and even for large-scale freehand insect painting. It encompasses the same requirements as other types of baimiao-such as line quality, brushwork, form, and composition. Because insects often serve as the "eye" of a painting-the focal point that brings the entire work to life-the demands on line quality and form are exceptionally high. Only through subtle precision can the insects be rendered with vivid liveliness. Given that most insects are small in size, mastering their anatomical structure becomes a fundamental prerequisite for baimiao insect drawing.
This requires us to immerse ourselves in nature and study insects in their own right. Only by gaining a thorough understanding of the various forms of different insects and selecting the appropriate lines to express them, can we capture the subtle nuances and depict their lively postures with authenticity.
