This work, which is included in the new "Guides des civilisations" series, does not claim to be exhaustive ; it simply attempts to convey the most characteristic aspects of a civilization from which we have inherited most of our philosophical concepts, our literary and artistic heritage, and our vocabulary. What do we know about the Greeks - their cities,their ideals, or their lives ? What can we learn from the Nike of Samothrace or the Venus de Milo ? The primary purpose of this book is to refine ourpartial and fragmented perceptions, to avoid preconceived notions, and to help us to understand a civilization whose criteria are so foreign to us and yet which are still such an intimate part of our lives. Only part of the History of Ancient Greece is depicted in this book : the period ranging from its birth up to the death of Alexander the Great (323 B.C.). This distinction from the following period - that of "Hellenistic" Greece - is amply justified from a political, social, religious, moral and artistic point of view. Anne-Marie Buttin, whose agrégation degree is in Classical Literature, formerly taught preparatory classes for the grandes écoles.
