De fet, la resta ens proporcionen grans beneficis: per exemple, el planeta no es col·lapsa gràcies a aquests éssers vius, que descomponen la matèria orgànica perquè plantes i animals tinguin els minerals necessaris per sobreviure; el nostre cos no podria subsistir sense la munió de microorganismes amb què interacciona de manera profitosa, i, si no fos per l’acció dels bacteris, els mars serien plens d’hidrocarburs i hauríem perdut la guerra contra la contaminació química.
