As autumn settles over the landscape, residents of Lilac Lake prepare for cooler weather, and life goes on as usual in Monroe County. Even a movie production company chooses Monroetown for the setting of a new film, giving everyone hope that it will bring tourism and funds to the area.
Reece Donelly's days are full of last-minute jobs for clients. Her job allows her to meet her grandmother's dear friend Gertrude Cressvine, but strange occurrences at Gert's farm draws Reece into a perplexing mystery. What is making the uncanny sounds at night and is killing livestock and pets? Why would it leave a dead rabbit on Gert's back porch?
Jackson departs town abruptly without telling Reece. Worried, she looks for clues to his whereabouts, but Jackson's girlfriend, Rhonda, thwarts her at every turn.
