Die Pastoralkonstitution Gaudium et spes gehört zu den wirkmächtigsten Texten des Zweiten Vatikanischen Konzils (1962-1965), dessen Impulse auch im 21. Jahrhundert fortwirken. Gaudium et spes verschränkt katholische Glaubenslehre und Ethik in einer Weise, die nicht etwa nach dem Modell von Grundlegung und praktischer Anwendung zu beschreiben ist. Vielmehr bietet die Pastoralkonstitution eine neue Grammatik katholischer Theologie, und der pastorale Grundzug des Konzils findet in Gaudium et spes seinen stärksten Ausdruck. Zugleich ist der Text ein ökumenisches Dokument von Rang, in das Anregungen aus anderen Kirchen eingeflossen sind und das seinerseits starken Einfluss auf die ökumenische Bewegung wie auf ihre sozialethischen Themen in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten ausgeübt hat.
