These complex board games usually involve more strategy than luck and deeper player investment in the game's play, mechanics, narratives, and rules. Today, the rise of the complex board game mirrors the rise of more complex media products. In Game Play: Paratextuality in Contemporary Board Games, Paul Booth examines complex board games based on book, TV, film, and graphic novel media franchises, including Doctor Who, Lovecraft's Arkham Horror,The Walking Dead, Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and The Hunger Games.
