The question of failure of materials is among one of the most fundamental issues facing engineers. Within past and current practice and design, the notion of failure has largely been treated as a plastic limit condition of the Mohr-Coulomb type in geomechanics. However, failure modes can be encountered in the field, including the premature collapse of geomaterials below the plastic limit in the absence of any rupture surface.
