If ever there was a need for clarity, for understanding, for peace in a world that is raining down chaos and hatred upon us all, that day is today. Such a need can be filled no better than by nurturing a deeper understanding of the Word of God, and it just so happens that this best describes the purpose of this reference.
What you're holding in your hands is a commentary on the epistle to the Hebrews, which, to my mind, is the most critical book of the canon when it comes to making sense of the transition from Old Testament law to New Testament grace. As our great High Priest and coming King, the majesty and beauty of the Lord Jesus is put on full display in this wonderful letter to Jewish Christians. My purpose in this commentary is to help you see Him more clearly and to love Him more deeply than ever before.
Without Jesus, this world is entirely without hope. But because of Him, we have a Prophet who both tells us and shows us how to live a life pleasing to our Creator. He explains the past and shows us the future, and He gives us correction as well as encouragement on how we should live in the present. As our great High Priest, Jesus intercedes for us day and night, and He pleads to the Father on our behalf. His sacrifice of Himself makes all who believe in Him both priests and kings. We can go to the very throne of God and lay all our prayers and petitions directly at His feet, and we are in need of no man to represent us, for Jesus is our Advocate.
In Jesus, we have a King who "...will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation" (Heb. 9:28). Man cannot do much beyond tearing this world and its inhabitants apart. Only God can fix what man is bent on destroying, and one day soon, He will come and do exactly that. The hope of every believer is to see his Savior come and take His place on the throne of David, where He will rule this world with perfect righteousness. In so doing, He will bring true and lasting peace. All these beautiful truths are found in this letter to the Hebrews, and they are wrapped up in one perfect Man, the man Christ Jesus.
