The Manual of Twelve Devas states: "When Yama Deva is pleased, people are not killed, do not die in accidents, and epidemics do not spread. When this deity is angered, people die in accidents, and epidemics spread." Therefore, this practice should be performed to prevent death by accident and to aid in recovery from illness.
Furthermore, in Indian mythology, he was the son of the progenitor of humanity and the first person to die, so he came to be regarded exclusively as the god of death and the ruler of the underworld.
