With metal roller skates clamped on their shoes, three little girls stumble their way through a world of enormous changes. One girl lives in California, one lives in Illinois and the third lives in Wisconsin. It is the 1950s and even though they are separated by hundreds of miles their childhood experiences are similar, due to the influences of suburbia and television. By the time these girls trade their skates for VW Beetles their lives are completely different. They move from Bobby socks to panty hose, from sock hops to rock concerts, from wearing girdles to going braless. But the social changes are even more significant.
