Bridget and Josie are leaving rural Ireland for New York, to stay with a distant relative, Catherine, who has found jobs for them. On the journey they meet a young orphaned girl, Julia, who is travelling alone in hopes of staying with her long-absent brother.
When they get to the brother's address, he is no longer there, and no-one knows where he has gone to. In the following weeks they do their best to search for him, but are unsuccessful as he has a common name, and the police are not particularly interested in finding yet another lost Irish man.
The girls slowly get used to their strange new life and their jobs, which are demanding in different ways. (Bridget is a lady's companion, and Josie is a childminder, while Julia is forced to take a job in a factory.) Catherine turns out to be unpleasant and grasping and not the welcoming link with home they had hoped for.
One day Bridget gives chase when she sees a young girl stealing a rich woman's handbag. When a policeman appears, the thief has vanished and Bridget is left holding the bag and accused of theft.
As they can't afford legal representation, Josie knows she will have to speak on Bridget's behalf in court - Bridget can't be trusted not to lose her head and make things worse. On the day, Josie manages to convince the judge and Bridget is acquitted. As they leave the court, they meet the rich woman whose handbag was stolen. She knows that Bridget wasn't the culprit, and that she was responsible for the return of her valuables. She asks if she can do anything to repay the girls, and immediately Josie asks for help in finding Julia's brother.
Some days later, the brother, with his wife and baby, show up at Catherine's house, and there's a happy and tearful reunion, and Julia is invited to live with them. The rich American finds Bridget and Josie a place to live with her children's retired nanny, a warm and motherly woman, and everyone lives happily ever after.
